As Johannesburg finally enters its Winter period, after was seemed like a Summer that would never end, the most unusual craze, probably imported from the mountain-hugging Capies, has hit Johannesburg – frozen yoghurt. And while frozen yoghurt has been around for a while, nowadays you can’t turn a corner without a new frozen yoghurt brand store staring you in the face. For those of us in the Parks, Filo Frozen Yoghurt has opened in the newly renovated Victory Park shopping center, and with a positioning between Dischem, Woolies and Virgin Active, it seems to be doing very well – judging from the well-fed personal trainers at the gym.
The process is very simple. Once inside, a wall in the store is dedicated to dispensers which each have a set of particular flavours (which change regularly). At Filo, the guys have chosen to put two flavours that go well together within one machine with two dispensers, thus ensuring that you don’t have to move over 1 meter to get another flavour, and probably also to ensure that you are a little more liberal when dishing up for yourself.
The rather deep cardboard bowls as located directly next to the dispensers, so all you have to do is grab one, decide on your flavours, and serve yourself by pulling down on a lever. Once again, I think that they allow us to serve ourselves knowing that we would probably add more – after all, you would also probably remember as a youth getting irritated that you couldn’t do it yourself – and now, all grown up, you can, and boy do you, make up for all the times you felt you didn’t get enough.
But that’s not all.
The next step is to top everything off with your favourite topping – just because the perception of Frozen Yoghurt being fat free allows you to add all the fat back in, just before paying, without feeling all that guilty. And there you have it.
And once you are finished dishing up, just place the bowl on a scale, fall over at the ridiculously high price of what you have dished up, but knowing that you can’t really give it all back, you pay it and leave, fighting back the pain of spending a small fortune of frozen yoghurt with every spoonful of seriously delicious goodness. I highly recommend the Raspberry and Mango (particularly the Mango) flavours, topped with red grapes. It may be on the expensive side, considering what you are paying for, but it is so good, and its pretty fun dishing up for yourself. That’s probably why I keep going back. Go figure.
