So, if you are wondering what fragrance Batman would wear, and we are not talking about the lame-ass Joel Schumacher interpretations, but rather the Christopher Nolan creations, then look no further. The new Polo Red EDT fragrance from Ralph Lauren as as strong, manly and powerful as the caped crusader. At a blogger and media event last week at Stuttafords in Sandton City, the Polo team introduced the usual bunch of Jozi newsies to the blazing red bottle, and have us a quick introduction as to why this one will stand out from its blue and black predecessors.
The Polo Red was created by famed perfumer Olivier Gillotin, who is a favourite among celebrities when they go down the road of creating their signature fragrance. While I could care less about celebrity fragrances, a past creation that Olivier did for the house of Tom Ford did earn my respect, the Atelier d’Orient Rive d’Ambre. Thankfully, Olivier’s Polo Red fragrance is less of a celebrity fragrance, and far more one that internalises the spirit of the fragrance and represents a believable personal perspective of the intended customer.
While I was excited to be introduced to the Polo Red, I was not expecting to be blown away, and half believed that it would be one tat would pass by and bet yet another fragrance on Stuttafords’ ever growing fragrance counters. How glad to be wrong on that account. From the first sniff, the Polo Red is enticing, with a perfect mixture of woody and spicy characters; a mixture that will certainly appeal to men who want to exude strength, masculinity and a bold character.
So, what does it smell like?
As stated, the fragrances over character is woody and spicy, but it has various other notes that add to the fragrances complexity. So, expect opening notes of red grapefruit, cranberry and Italian lemon, middle notes of red sage, red saffron and lavender, and the end notes, described as the “red notes” of red wood, hot amber and coffee. The end notes are those notes that linger well after application.
Overall, the Polo Red is solid fragrance that has achieved a break-through within a consumer category that is in increasingly becoming more and more cluttered. It may even renew the halo around the Polo fragrance range and lead to a reintroduction to the Polo blue and black fragrances.
The Polo Red will soon be available at Stuttafords, and will be rolled out for a wider distribution within the coming weeks. The EDT is available in a 75ML and 125ML bottle, and expect to pay around the R900-R1000 mark for the 125ml – however pricing is to be confirmed, and is subject to individual retailers.
